Goobology was submitted to Brackey's Game Jam 26'! The jam's theme was Strange Places. What better way to engage with the theme and our players than to have the players create their very own Strange Place? In this cozy, alien terrarium builder what you decorate with will determine which Goober decides to make your terrarium their home! Can you collect them all? We ranked 50th in Visuals and 132 overall out of 1,424 submissions. I pitched the idea for Goobology with Chenxi Gao.
Terrain
"Bright Blight" terrain
"Hidden Observers" terrain
Players have a choice between a jar and a bottle for their terrarium! I also drew the assets for the different terrains. All of these assets needed to have a certain size to fit correctly in Unity. I closely collaborated with the programmers and game designers to create these assets.

Early Concepts
One of my ideas for a biome was to combine camouflage and fungi. The Goobers would hide themselves by using the various fungi that grew on them in clever ways. My personal favorite is the cat with the big fungi tail! My idea sadly wasn't used, but may be used if the Crafty Cloak team ever revisits Goobology.
My other idea for a biome was to combine sealife with various gemstones. The Goobers in this biome survive by performing photosythesis. They have evolved different ways to absorb light through their gemstones, whether that be by developing sharp claws to scale rocks or even using other creatures as their own prisims- the possibilities were endless!
Art Pillar
Working on Goobology was a very unique experience, especially as the lead artist. For the art pillar, I wanted to push for simple yet memorable designs, ones you could draw from memory. We also experimented with bold line art and simple patterns. The artists were tasked to create different "biomes," for the different terrariums the player could make. The idea behind these biomes was that you needed to combine two very different things, like biological solar panels growing on a rock or a bioluminescent street light tree- It was a very fun project that the team got really creative with!
